A bit of history – The Crescent, Tyrrellspass
Our restaurant (previously The Village Hotel) was built / rebuilt c 1815 and underwent a tasteful revamp, while in keeping with the surroundings, under the new ownership of the Browne family in 2016.
The village itself originally a medieval settlement, was redeveloped under the patronage of Jane, Countess of Belvedere, c.1820. and has a distinctive semicircle shaped green (adjacent to our restaurant) and a crescent of houses, including what was previously the old court house (redeveloped c.1820) and the Church of Ireland church. Some of these fantastic buildings can be seen on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage website. The church, is on an elevated site off the green, and has an elaborate west tower, a spire in a Gothic Revival style and contains the Rochfort family monuments.
Tyrrellspass was the recipient of a prestigious European Architectural Heritage Award in the past and has been the recipient of many Tidy towns awards.
